Add PayPal Plus

Melody Jaimon • August 18, 2022

PayPal Plus is a popular payment solution in Germany that incorporates frequently used payment methods such as PayPal, credit cards, direct debit (ELV), and Pay by Invoice—even if the customer does not have a PayPal account.

It is crucial to accept a variety of payment methods, as customers are likely to abandon their purchases if they cannot use their chosen payment method. By activating PayPal Plus in your business, you can quickly and simply provide your customers with a variety of payment methods, including the extremely popular EU SEPA method, and therefore enhance your sales.

PayPal Plus is exclusively offered in Germany.

Configure PayPal Plus

To configure PayPal Plus:

  1. Click eCommerce in the side panel, then click Manage Store.
  2. Choose PayPal PLUS by clicking Payment, then Choose Payment Method.
  3. Follow the link Apply for PayPal PLUS.
  4. You will be routed to the PayPal website, where you can sign in to an existing account or establish a new one to apply for PayPal Plus.
  5. After your PayPal Plus account has been approved, enter your PayPal email address and click Save
  6. Ensure that the PayPal Plus feature is enabled in your PayPal account. Click Continue to PayPal to view the PayPal Plus status.
  7. You can also accept payments using the Pay upon Invoice option to be paid upfront while PayPal protects you from chargebacks and assumes all associated risks. To activate the Pay upon Invoice payment method, click the Apply for Pay upon Invoice button.
  8. You will be redirected to the PayPal website to request the invoice payment method.
  9. In the Payment method name at checkout section, you may specify a name for this payment method or leave it as PayPal.
  10. In the Payment instructions for customers area, you may provide useful information about how the payment process will be handled for your customers at checkout.

After completing these steps, the PayPal algorithm will begin to automatically provide new payment alternatives to your clients depending on their location and browser cookies.

Accept Payments with PayPal Plus

Once you enable PayPal Plus in your store, your customers will have the option to use this payment method throughout the checkout process. Using PayPal Plus, your German customers have the option of paying with PayPal, SEPA-Lastschrift, a credit card, or an invoice.

Depending on their place of origin, your customers can select between one and many payment methods. For example, if a customer is from Belgium, only PayPal and credit card alternatives are available.

After selecting a chosen payment method, customers will be taken to the PayPal website to complete the transaction.

Once the money has been processed, the order status will be instantly updated. You can always examine an order's payment method and current status by navigating to
My Sales → Orders in your Store's Control Panel and clicking on the order in question.
