Sell on Instagram

Melody Jaimon • August 24, 2022

By tagging products from your Store in your Instagram posts, you can sell them. When you show off your products on Instagram, people can tap on them to see the price and more information. When you tag your products in Instagram posts, you also give customers a direct link to your online store where they can buy the product.

To use this feature, your business must meet Instagram's requirements.

Shopping on Instagram

When you shop on Instagram, you can use Facebook to get to Instagram's platform. With this feature, you can add tags to photos on Instagram that link to products in your Facebook shop catalog. When a customer taps on the tag, you can give them more information about the product. This feature lets you share information about a product, its price, and a direct link to your store, where a customer can finish the purchase.

Instagram is testing Shopping in Store right now. Businesses in supported countries that meet these requirements will be able to use Shopping in Store over time.

When someone clicks on the product tag in your post, they see the following:

  • The image of the product from your site.
  • The description of the product.
  • The price of the item.
  • A link to the product on your site where people can buy it.

You can tag up to five products per image or twenty products per carousel in a post.

After 9 shopping posts, a business's Instagram business profile will have a Shop tab that stays there. This makes it easy for customers to see all posts with tags on your account.

Access Shopping on Instagram

With Shoppable Posts, Instagram sets a few rules for how to sell on Instagram:

  • You must have your business in one of these 44 countries.
  • You must follow Instagram's merchant agreement for your business to work.
  • You must have a business profile on Instagram (free to set up).
  • Your business should mainly sell physical goods that follow Facebook's commerce policy.
  • You need to have the most recent version of the Instagram app.
  • Your Facebook business page needs to be linked to a Facebook catalog.

To connect your Store to Instagram, you must:

  1. Join Facebook with your store.
  2. Set up a business profile on Instagram.
  3. Link your Instagram account to your Facebook profile.

When you're done, Instagram will look over your account before letting you use the feature.

Step 1: Put your items in the Facebook Shop.

If your physical products meet Facebook's commerce policy and you already have a Facebook business page, it's easy to upload your products.

Step 2: Link your Instagram account to your Facebook catalogue.

Go to the Store Control Panel, click on All Sales Channels, and then click on Sell on Instagram.

The next step is to connect your Instagram account to your Facebook account. You can also change your Instagram account to a business profile from within your account.

When you're done, Instagram will look at your account. Instagram says that processing can take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks.

Until Instagram verifies your account, you won't be able to use the Shoppable Posts feature.

When you go back to the page in the Store Control Panel called "Sell on Instagram," you might notice that the button still says "Connect to Instagram." This does not mean that you linked your Instagram account to Facebook in the wrong way. The button that says "Connect to Instagram" might stay in your Store Control Panel. However, ensure:

  • In Settings, Instagram, on your Facebook page, you can see information about your Instagram account;
  • Your Instagram account is an online business card. On your Instagram profile page, your Business Type will be shown right next to your account name and the buttons for Email, Directions, or Call.

Wait for Instagram to approve your account for the Shopping feature after you've made sure your Instagram account is properly linked to your Facebook page.

As soon as your account is approved, Instagram will let you know that you can turn on the feature in your Instagram app that lets you tag products.

Enable Product Tagging for Instagram

Once your account is approved, do the following on Instagram to turn on the feature:

  1. Login to your Instagram Profile.
  2. Tap the alert at the top of your profile that says "Get Started."
  3. Go to Settings if you don't see the alert.
  4. Click Shopping, then click Continue.
  5. Choose a product catalog that you want to link to your business profile, and then tap Done.

If you go to Instagram and don't see "Shopping" under "Business Settings," it's likely that your account is still being reviewed. If your account hasn't been approved for the product tagging feature, make sure you've done everything you need to do to get it.

Tag Products in Instagram

Once you turn on Instagram's Shopping feature, you can tag products in your posts. You can tag up to 5 products per single-image post and 20 products per carousel. Through your Instagram history, you can tag products in posts.

If your products come in different sizes or colors, for example, Instagram counts each size or color option as a separate item. This could mean that you have more products in your Instagram catalog than you do in your Facebook Shop.

When you choose a photo for the post, add filters and a caption:

  1. Tap the items you want to tag in the image.
  2. Enter the product names you want to tag.
  3. Choose the items that come up in the search box.
  4. To share your post, tap "Done."

Instagram will look at your product tags to make sure they are in line with its rules for commerce. Most of the time, it only takes a few seconds to review a product, but sometimes Instagram needs more time to look at it in detail.

Tags under review are marked as Pending. As soon as Instagram approves them, you'll be able to see these tags.

If you get rid of a product from your catalog or it runs out of stock, the tag that goes with it will be taken off of all posts where it was featured.

When the product comes back in stock, the product tag will not show up again.
